It feels like only good things can happening from doubling down on making our art vs planning, filming, editing 13 new Reels to post on IG in hopes that 6% of our followers even see it. Onward to more fun stuff - thanks for the link!
As an artist and writer on Substack, I could not agree with you more. I’ve never forced a painting and I’ve learned to not force my writing either. What happens, happens because it’s meant to, not because of self imposed social/content medias so called “rules”. Thanks and keep on publishing when it feels right for you.
I've long struggled with being made to feel that I *must* keep a regular writing schedule in order to be successful. I manage it for a little while, but then burn out quite quickly with having to force myself to think of something to write and then don't write anything for months. So, like you, I feel liberated when someone else says it's OK to give yourself time off. I also love the point about how people subscribe here because they want to hear what you have to say 😊
Thank you so much David. I always enjoy when people read what they have written. I love listening. I laughed so hard when you shared that people emailed you to point out grammatical errors. Hilarious! I am not a writer. However, I am a reader. Glad to have found you. Appreciate it.
THANK YOU! Capitals 😂 I do it because I love it, because it’s fun. Yet sometimes, despite everything I’ve been through trying to come back to writing for fun, I still find myself adding pressure, getting stressed about it. Impostering 😂 yesterday I had a great time writing a silly, cheeky poem that made me giggle my ass off, posted it, then chickened out thinking oooh what if they think stuff… and i unpublished it. Argh! It’s on my website now… So thank you for your words. Big giant hugs! And a smooch to your pooch!
I think this post may have liberated me from my internal pressure and blocks to writing more on Substack, because you just nailed every single reason that was holding me back. As a new subscriber, I thank you, and look forward to reading more of your posts.
All of this very valid. It's been a fear of mine if I ever do make money in my writing. That said I also realize how much I'm enjoying the creative process. The biggest thing for me is removing the blocks that stand in my way. If I can get over them, and to some degree myself I'll be fine. Until then I'll continue to beat myself up
This is beautiful and so very real. You have hit the nail on the head with the tension of being a creative in this world today, David. It’s so hard to preserve the sacredness of such a raw, human necessity as creating without giving into the culture’s pressure that it must become monetized. It’s such a hard balance to walk when the cost of living is so high and the bills have to be paid somehow, yet we are driven by our passions. OBA Magazine echos your mission to rebel against the rat race and hopes to help empower creatives to make a better working world for ourselves!
Truth. I was finding it hard this past weekend to not log on and check how things were going. We live in such a fast moving society and feel we have to post all the time. But we all need a break and we all need fun things to do. Great post.
Long live Beans! Cheers mate!

✨ Great article David. I also get emails about my spelling and grammar. Oh well! 😅

I had no paywall on my Substack for the first year. This post makes me want to drop the paywall again completely!!
Oh god I don’t know! It works for me but might not be right for everyone 😅
